CAREER:   Optical Physicist in Industry, peaking with the founding and management (president) of AstroTerra Corporation.  Grew company to 60 employees manufacturing high speed wireless communications equipment using lasers.  After selling the company in 2000, primarily engaged in consulting work along with raising 2 kids (Kevin, age 11, Muirlands Middle School and Nina, age 9, La Jolla Elementary School).

 

EDUCATION INVOLVEMENT:

-Teaching Assistant at Caltech (Optics Lecture, Optics Lab, Senior Physics Lab)

-Teaching Assistant at Princeton University (Solid State Physics, Model Train Lab)

-Teaching Assistant at Summer Science Program, Inc., three summers (1981-83)

-Trustee of Summer Science Program Inc. (www.ssp.org), President (2008-11), Past President (2011-14)

      (39 day intensive summer program in Astronomy for rising high school seniors who make observations and

      calculate the orbit of a near earth asteroid.  Most participants attend MIT, Caltech and Ivies for college)

-La Jolla Elementary School Site Council

-Sponsor of REMS Science Competition at La Jolla High School for 3rd-5th graders

-Volunteer at La Jolla Elementary Family Science Night, La Jolla Elementary School Run Club

-Provided 500 eclipse glasses for La Jolla Elementary students to watch partial solar eclipse and transit of Venus

-Presented numerous scientific papers, and chaired Optical Wireless Communications Conference for 5 years

-My father was a Math Professor (UCSD), two brothers are Professors (Math, U. Utah; Music, U. Colorado)

-My wife, Leigh Plesniak, is a former USD Biochemistry Professor, and currently tutors in Math and Chemistry

-Current substitute teacher in Physics at The Bishop’s School, including 9 weeks AP Physics B in 2014.
